Docs: Kent 12-year-old killed while riding scooter, 19-year-old driver had BAC of .150

A 12-year-old child has died following a crash in Kent, and a 19-year-old driver was arrested for vehicular homicide.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on 132nd Ave SE, just south of Sunrise Elementary School.

FOX 13 News spoke to the 12-year-old's mom, Shellie Coury. She said she was outside and heard the sound of the crash. She says she went toward the sound and found her youngest son, Gabriel, on the ground.

Coury tells FOX 13 News her son just graduated from Sunrise Elementary School a few weeks ago.

She describes her son as creative and said he planned to make a clothing line with one of his friends. She says her son loved sports, especially baseball and football.

Coury also said her son always followed the rules. She said he always used the crosswalk when visiting friends in the neighborhood, and would always text her when he arrived and when he was leaving to come home.

She wants to thank the first responders for their hard work trying to save her son, and she wants to thank the community for being supportive.

On Tuesday, Gabriel was riding his scooter home from the park. He was only a few feet away from his home when he was hit.

Witnesses told dispatch that a child was hit by a vehicle and was seriously injured. Passerbys called 911 and began CPR on the child. Kent Police officers arrived soon after and took over CPR measures, but the child did not survive.

A 19-year-old man was found nearby shortly after the accident. Police believe he was the driver involved in the crash and that alcohol may have played a factor in the crash.

According to court documents, the 19-year-old driver told police he drank four cans of alcoholic iced tea in a park with his friends before getting in his truck.

Court documents say while driving, the teen crossed the double yellow line into the oncoming traffic lane to pass cars in front of him.

The teen told police he lost control and hit Gabriel. Documents say he told police he was going about 60 mph in the 35 mph zone.

According to court documents, the 19-year-old driver failed multiple field sobriety tests and blew a .150 in a preliminary breath test, which is about twice the legal limit.

He was taken into custody for investigation of vehicular homicide, but has not been officially charged. Because of this, FOX 13 News is not naming the teenage suspect.

On Wednesday, the 19-year-old suspect refused to appear in court.

Officials with the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said the teen is held behind bars on a $100,000 bond.

FOX 13 News spoke to neighbors. They tell us the road is dangerous.

About six months ago, a 17-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by two different cars when trying to cross the street.

FOX 13 News asked the City of Kent if they have plans to make any changes to the road. Officials with the city would not confirm any plans, but did say incidents like these are considered when making changes.

The Coury family is raising money for the funeral services through a GoFundMe
